Together with my dad I will be opening my first exhibition in collaboration with the Muenster based gallery NORD14.
JAPAN (UN)KNOWN showcases a range of 33 works originating from my 4-month exchange semester in Tokyo and the subsequent trip I took together with my family along the golden route - Tokyo, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka and Mount Fuji.
The trip was not about a project and we did not have a photographic goal nor a plan in mind. Yet something happened, something unfolded during the trip. Something that might best be explained by the iconic torii of the Fushimi-Inari-Shrine in Kyoto. If something is so magnificent that it’s photographed countless times every day, what then creates a tiny bit of uniqueness?
One of our answers lay, unspoken, in abstraction. Long shutter speeds and shutter-drags make details disappear. Colors and shapes become dominant, creating an image that is a photograph yet also resembles a painting with its flowing forms and color transitions. The experimenting nature of our photography during these days unfolded between us as a sort of wordless dialogue.
With abstraction and alienation certainly also comes autonomy and replicability becomes more difficult. Thus, JAPAN (UN)KNOWN is also a small manifesto of genuine photography. Shot with a minimum of equipment - just one camera and one lens at a time - using manual exposure. And finally edited moderately.
The exhibition will be opened with a Vernissage on the 10th of October 2026 and will be on display until the 16th of January 2027. Opening it together with my dad is a full-circle moment. I first picked up a camera over 10 years ago because of him and he continously inspired me to keep photographing. This makes JAPAN (UN)KNOWN all the more special
